The Goods: Ten Worst Insurance Companies in America

The American Association for Justice (AAJ) recently asked their researchers to identify the worst insurance companies for consumers in the United States.

Researchers undertook a comprehensive investigation of thousands of court documents, SEC and FBI records, state insurance department investigations and complaints, news accounts from across the country, and the testimony and depositions of former insurance agents and adjusters. They were thorough!

Their final list includes companies across a range of different insurance fields, including homeowners and auto insurers, health insurers, life insurers, and disability insurers. Fortunately, some of these insurers do not have a presence in Washington state.

As a practicing trial attorney in Washington, I would add GEICO to this list.

AAJ's Top Ten List is:
1. Allstate
2. Unum
3. AIG
4. State Farm
5. Conseco
6. WellPoint
7. Farmers
8. UnitedHealth
9. Torchmark
10. Liberty Mutual

  1. Jim,
Where do you think GEICO fits on the above list?

  2. I would put GEICO among the worst five auto insurers. My first criterion is, how fast does GEICO turn on its own injured customer by refusing to pay injury-related medical bills that are supposed to be a policy benefit? My second criterion is, how devoted is GEICO to putting injury claimants (against one of their customers) "through the wringer" of litigation by refusing to offer a reasonable settlement?

GEICO, like Allstate, has decided that the portion of each customer's premiums that is calculated in advance to pay legitimate claims for injuries caused by the customer should instead become a profit-center, where the tactics of deny, defend and delay really do pay off.
